Cuyabeno’s Pink Dolphin

The pink dolphin / Inia geoffrencis is the biggest species of river dolphin and reaches 2.5 meters in length and weighs up to 185 kg. It can live up to 30 years. Although they are often solitary, it is possible to find mothers together with their offspring.

Pregnancy lasts 11 months and the mothers take care of their offspring for the first two years. They usually move up to 20 km. per day at a speed of 6 km/h,  and  if  needed  they  can  swim  as  fast  as  22  km/h.  Its  diet  includes  50  species of fish, in particular piranhas that have a high protein value, they eat more or less 3 kg of fish per day.

Its coloration is usually grey but occasionally they can turn completely pink due to  their  cooling  system  that  activates  when  they  very  active  fishing,  playing  or  mating. It lowers the temperature of its body by sending blood closer to the water by the veins located near its skin.
